MARIAN STATUE IN BROADSTONE

A STREET PHOTOGRAPHER WHO LIKES DOING STUFF

MARIAN STATUE IN BROADSTONE
I am sure that not many people are aware of this “Marian Statue” beside the old Broadstone Station. Because of its colour [ or should I say lack of colour] it is not very visible from the road. I was aware of it but until today I did not know that there was a narrow walkway behind it and that there were steps leading up from the street below.

There are hundreds of statues of the Virgin Mary dotted around Ireland and there are at least 26 so called Marian Statues in Dublin and most were put up in the Marian Year of 1954, when entire communities mobilised to erect a statue for their area.

As far as I can tell the majority are are still in good condition and regularly maintained by the people around them.

The statue in Broadstone appears to be in good condition but the surrounding area is badly run-down and is now effectively a construction site.

I have been unable to find out if the statue is to remain at its current location and/or if the steps from the street will be retained when the new LUAS stop becomes active in 2017.
